I just wanted to update everyone on the progress of my Change.org petition regarding the new McDonald’s documentary, 540 Meals: Choices Make the Difference.
Since the Washington Post published its front page story last Friday about the film and my campaign, almost 40,000 more people have signed the petition! That means over 56,000 people have now expressed their concern about the use of this heavily branded and potentially misleading film as “nutrition education” in our children’s schools.
And here’s some more exciting news: over the weekend, an NBC film crew came to my house to film a segment about this campaign for the Today show! Look for that Today show report either tomorrow or Wednesday. (When I have the exact date and time, I’ll share the information on Twitter and on The Lunch Tray’s Facebook page.)
As I’ve said many times since starting this campaign, McDonald’s should be free to show its documentary on YouTube, on television or in movie theaters. It just doesn’t belong in our schools, where it’s very likely to lead impressionable, impulsive teens and pre-teens to eat even more fast food than they do now. So thanks to all of you for your continued support of this important petition effort.

Congratulations!!! This is all so fantastic–and I hope McDonald’s gets the message loud and clear!

Thank you, Sally! I really hope Steve Easterbrook, McD CEO, is paying attention. The company has shown in recent years that it wants to be responsive to consumer concerns, and this is clearly of concern to a lot of people!

Wonderful work! I’m happy to support this! And I REALLY appreciate you taking initiative on this! I don’t need the lessons on health that I am teaching my children being derailed by McDonald’s marketing campaigns being touted as nutritional information in school! This is just too confusing for their growing minds.

Thank you so much for those words of support, Stephanie!
