Hey, do you guys know about the Inside School Food podcast on Heritage Radio? It’s a really informative show geared toward school food professionals and anyone else who wants to learn about the latest school food issues.
This week, podcast host Laura Stanley interviews Dora Rivas, former head of the Dallas ISD school food program and a former past president of the School Nutrition Association. You may remember my interview last year with Rivas regarding the SNA’s mission to roll back critical Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act school food standards. Rivas, along with 18 other past SNA presidents, broke ranks with the SNA by sending a letter to Congress in support of maintaining those standards, and she continues to be a passionate advocate for healthier school food.
Before recently agreeing to oversee child nutrition programs in Europe and Asia for the U.S. military, Rivas worked for decades in school food, first in Brownsville, Texas and then in Dallas. During her tenure she pioneered many school food innovations, including being the first school food director to offer in-class breakfast, a program which is now popular nationwide.
