Since starting TLT in 2010, I’ve made it a tradition to post just before Thanksgiving on the topic that’s at the heart of my interest in school food reform: childhood hunger.
Currently over 15 million American kids live in households that are “food insecure,” that is, in which families don’t always know where their next meal is coming from. But what does that shocking statistic actually mean in terms of children’s daily lives and their longterm development? You might take a moment to read this recent Civil Eats piece by Elizabeth Grossman, “The Long Shadow of Childhood Hunger,” for the distressing answers to those questions.
Alleviating childhood hunger requires greater political will at the national level, including increased funding of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, or “food stamps.”) But that doesn’t mean we can’t do our part as individuals as well. Here are a few charities addressing childhood hunger, both in this country and around the world, which I particularly like:
And you can learn more about hunger in America and what we can do about it at the Food Research & Action Center (FRAC).
Thanks for helping The Lunch Tray help hungry kids! Wishing you all a safe and happy Thanksgiving, and I’ll see you back here next week.
