As the school year winds down, parents often scramble to find suitable year-end gifts for teachers. That’s why I’m glad to pass on this information from SPOON Foundation, an Portland, Oregon-based nonprofit devoted to improving nutrition for orphans, fostered and adopted children around the world.
SPOON’s mission is simple. There are peak periods in neonatal development and in early childhood when certain vitamins and minerals are necessary to prevent developmental deficits, but too often orphans and children in foster care aren’t getting these nutrients. That in turn leads to developmental delays which can make the child less likely to be chosen for adoption.
SPOON’s goal is to close that nutritional gap among orphans and fostered children, and also to provide parents of new adoptees with information on feeding strategies to correct any existing deficiencies.
To fund their work around the world, SPOON is selling Teacher Dedication Gift Cards. For ten dollars each (or three for $25, or six for $50), you can donate to their cause in the name of your child’s teacher (or bus driver, coach or anyone else you’d like to thank at year’s end.)
You can purchase the teacher cards here, and get more information about SPOON here.
