I’ve been interested in kids and food ever since I had kids of my own, but it’s not until you start blogging that you really get to know the universe of “players” out there discussing whatever issue you care about. And since my blog is not yet three months old (can you believe?), I’m still discovering lots of great sites to recommend. My only fear is that because I’m still so new at this, maybe I’m trumpeting resources you already know about. (Like getting your first t.v. and raving to everyone about this obscure little show you discovered called “Mad Men.”)
So, forgive me if you’re already a fan, but I just discovered It’s Not About Nutrition, a blog written Dina R. Rose, a mom with a PhD in sociology from Duke University who teaches workshops and provides private counseling on kid and food issues. The blog covers “the art and science of teaching kids to eat right.” It has a lot of advice on combatting pickiness but is a great resource for other food and nutrition issues as well. Last night, as I was cruising around her site, I found myself nodding and thinking “amen, sister!” over and over again.
The only quibble I’ve had (based on what I’ve read so far) is Rose’s advice that children should be given a bland “out” food like cottage cheese to eat if they don’t care for dinner. I, on the other hand, (as explained in my post about short-order cooking) would rather engineer my meals so that everyone can find something on the table they’ll eat, without the appearance of getting any sort of special treatment for not liking a meal.
But overall, Rose and I are very much on the same philosophical page and I know I’ll be referring to It’s Not About Nutrition a lot in the future.
(And thanks to my other new favorite blog, Fooducate, for pointing me in Rose’s direction.)
