Just wanted to let you know that Amy Kalafa’s new book, Lunch Wars, arrives in bookstores today.
For those of you who don’t know about Amy, she’s one of the famous “Two Angry Moms” (the other is school food advocate and frequent TLT commenter Dr. Susan Rubin, now of Better School Food.) Back in 2007, Amy and Susan produced an award-winning film of the same name which has inspired parents all over the country to try to improve the food in their kids’ lunch rooms.
Amy’s new book, subtitled, “How to Start a School Food Revolution and Win the Battle for Our Children’s Health,” is something of a sequel to the “Two Angry Moms” movie. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a manuscript of the book a few months ago and I can attest to the fact that it’s bursting with information, stories, studies and more to guide parents in helping to improve their children’s school food environment. (Neat side note: The Lunch Tray is featured in the book, too!)
Like another one of TLT’s favorite resources for school food reform, the website PEACHSF, Lunch Wars provides parents with step-by-step action plans, as opposed to flighty theories. It’s definitely worth a look for parents who want to start advocating for change.

Dr. Susan Rubin says
Quick clarification: I was not a co-producer of the Two Angry Moms film. I was a subject of the film due to my work with Better School Food which existed long before Amy made her movie. I had been working on school food advocacy for many years before Amy met me.
Depsite the fact that I am, for some reason, not included in her book, I wish Amy and her book the best of luck.

Susan – corrections noted. I had thought Better School Food was a site/organization you started post Angry Moms. Either way, a great resource for all of us!

Who is she at war with?
Bettina Elias Siegel says
Hmm. . . provocative question. Perhaps the status quo? Do you think the title is too inflammatory?
Maggie says
Just good marketing, I suppose. Are as many people going to be interested in “Lunch Cooperation” by a “two really friendly happy moms”?
Bettina Elias Siegel says
LOL! 🙂

I hadn’t looked at their web site for awhile, so took another look.
Here’s a quote from there about the film “Two Angry Moms”:
“A film’s title has to grab your attention and make you curious. Names like “Making School Food Healthier” just aren’t sexy enough to draw a crowd.”
So, sounds like she’s following the same idea with the book.
I understand the point of drawing attention to the issue with words like war, revolution, battle and anger. (obviously, it has caused me to think and react!) My concern would be, once attention has been drawn, I’m not sure if the process of making the improvements is best served if those involved would continue to react and interact as if it’s a war, battle or in anger.
