A while back I interviewed Sally Sampson, founder and creator of ChopChop, a new quarterly cooking magazine for kids. The magazine’s mission is to “educate kids to cook and be nutritionally literate, empower them to actively participate as health partners with their families, and help establish and support better eating habits for a lifetime of good nutrition.” But all my kids know is that it’s full of accessible recipes, games and articles that teach healthful eating without being preachy or obesity-focused. They (and I) love it.
Meanwhile, I only just found out that one of my favorite parenting/food writers, Catherine Newman, has been blogging at the ChopChop website since May. Yippee!
If you’re not familiar with Catherine Newman, she’s the author of the much beloved “Bringing Up Ben and Birdy” blog that used to run at Babycenter (where it’s now archived) and continues in another form here. She’s also written a parenting memoir, and her writing and recipes have appeared in lots of places including the recently-discontinued Dalai Mama Dishes blog. (Not to get all gushy here, but few bloggers can make me laugh and tear up with a single post and Catherine manages to pull that off with surprising regularity. Her last column for Dalai Mama Dishes is but one example.)
Over on the ChopChop blog, Catherine undertakes the cooking of various ChopChop recipes with her son Ben (although her daughter Birdy gets in on the action now and then). It’s mostly cooking-focused and filled with lots of photos, but even in this rather limited forum, Catherine manages to make me laugh:
If you have not enlisted your children yet in the preparation of a meal, please do try it. At first it’s terrible–it will take five extra months to make a single dinner, and by the time your kid is done spilling flour everywhere and grating a carrot, there will be cobwebs draped over your comatose eyelids.
What parent hasn’t been there?
So go check out Catherine’s blog and also take a look at the magazine. And to make it easy for you, I just happen to have a big stack of copies of the Summer 2011 issue (seen above) and I’ll send one to the first ten fifteen readers who leave a comment on this post. (I’ll contact you offline for your mailing address.)
Good luck!

Would love a copy!
This would be GREAT! My son is always asking to cook.
Don’t need a copy, as I’m a subscriber and ChopChop lover! Readers should know that ChopChop subscriptions make great gifts AND enable this nonprofit to put these wonderful magazines in the hands of kids who wouldn’t otherwise have access to this fun food publication. ChopChop provides their magazines through schools and other organizations, benefitting so many families!!

I want to get a subscription to this magazine for my 8yr old grandaughter for Christmas, but would love to have one free issue to have under the Christmas tree until her first magazine arrives. It says that it take 12 weeks at least to get the first magazine.
Thanks for your reply as to how I can get one free magazine, since you cannot buy it in stores.
Charlotte: I don’t usually do this but I actually have an extra copy that wasn’t claimed by a winner of our giveaway. If you email me your address at bettina at thelunchtray dot com, I’ll get it out to you. Glad to help make Christmas special for your granddaughter!
