OK, I know this isn’t strictly a “kids and food” story, but I can’t resist a report on the food madness that takes place each year at the Houston Rodeo, which is going on right now.
According to today’s Houston Chronicle, among this year’s offerings are the “traditional” items — “barbecue, sausage on a stick, burritos, breakfast tacos, fried shrimp tacos, burgers (some topped with deep fried bacon), funnel cakes, cinnamon rolls, banana pudding and sliders.”
And then there are this year’s show stoppers:
- A “pulled pork sundae” (a scoop of mashed potatoes, topped with pulled pork and gravy, served in a sundae cup);
- deep fried beef jerky;
- deep-fried moon pies;
- bacon dipped in chocolate;
- candy-apple coated pork rinds;
- chocolate-dipped jalapeños;
- banana-split funnel cakes;
- chocolate biscuit peanut butter pudding with spiced rum sauce; and
- chocolate dipped cheesecake on a stick.
(You can see photographs of some of the food here.)
The Chronicle quotes a member of the rodeo’s barbecue committee as saying, “Some of you might be in for a treat, and some of you might be headed to [the hospital] on a helicopter.”
A little gallows humor from a city that ranks among the the top ten fattest in America.

You didn’t mention my favorite…fried cookie dough. I’m not joking, it really was my favorite!
Bettina Elias Siegel says
OMG – Donna! I think I may have to get a nibble of that . . .
Lauren says
Ahhh fair food.
On a related note, it says soooo much that all our dining locations on my college campus smell like a state fair. Sugar, salt, and fried dough… So yes, college lunches are just as dreadful as k-12!
Bettina Elias Siegel says
NOT a good sign! 🙂

all things in moderation…
i am a huge fan of the bacon-chocolate combo. vosges makes a dark chocolate with bits of bacon in it. a couple bites is all it takes…. i’m not sure 6 or 7 complete pieces of bacon dipped in chocolate is quite the same thing… (i’m guessing there are people who probably eat that much.)
Bettina Elias Siegel says
Oh, yes, Anthony, they definitely are eating that much. The burrito served at the Rodeo was described by the Chronicle as being as large as a bed pillow! 🙂 Glad to see you here again, BTW. Hope you’ve been well!
