Do you need a little good news right about now? I know I sure do.
Check out this recent San Francisco Chronicle story about the school meal program in Oakland USD, which procures 80 percent of its produce from local farms, uses by-catch fish that would otherwise go to waste, and has dramatically decreased its carbon footprint. Though it only has to apply to 10 percent of its purchases right now, the district is also following a Good Food Purchasing Policy which requires food to meet certain standards for animal welfare, fair labor practices, sustainability and support of the local economy.
Of course, it remains unclear whether the USDA farm-to-school grants on which the district relies will survive or be reduced in the Trump administration. (My initial concerns about Trump, kids and food are here, for those who missed the post.)
But for now, this is a school meal program worth celebrating.
