Last night I received a Facebook message from a Lunch Tray reader that was so gratifying, I wanted to share it here today:
Hey Bettina: I meant to send you a message for a long time — I wanted to let you know that we formed a group of parents to control the unhealthy food given to students for celebrations, fundraisers and rewards at our school. We got most of our ideas from your PDF document when we started the movement last May.
After much pushback from the PTA and the previous principal, we worked closely with the new administration, which was very supportive, over the summer. When school started, the administration sent new guidelines to parents for healthier celebrations. They also asked that the PTA and teachers remove junk food from prizes and (most) fundraisers. We also created a menu of healthy, freshly made birthday treats that the parents can order from the cafeteria.Your manifesto was very useful! We posted it on FB and shared it with the administration. Thank you for giving us the tools to have a great start for our positive change!
Please write that if parents want to make it happen they need to team up — strength is in numbers! We created a logo for our group and ordered buttons to send a message that we meant business. 🙂
Thanks so much to this reader for taking the time to share her positive experiences with me. I hope you find her account as inspiring as I did!
