As I wrap up this year’s “It Takes a Village to Pack a Lunch” series, I want to talk about the all-important topic of lunch box gear.
By now I hope you know about the big players in the world of sustainable, reusable lunch box items such asEasylunchboxes, PlanetBox, LunchSkins, Snack Taxi, Lunchsense and Kids Konserve. (For more brands, you can check out this past round-up of reusable lunch gear.) Every now and then I still use a plastic sandwich bag or piece of foil, but I’ve been able to greatly reduce our family’s environmental lunch waste by purchasing many of these items.
I also wanted to mention a new company that recently came to my attention: ThriftTee Gear, which makes reusable lunch bags from recycled t-shirts! Take a look:
What’s especially cool is that you can send in your own t-shirt, so if your teen is wedded to a concert or school t-shirt that’s too small to be worn anymore, you can always turn it into a lunch sack!
Before signing off I also want to mention that, through October 15th, Lunch Tray readers can get 20% of Lunchsense items with the promo code TLT20.
Lunchsense is TLT’s very first sponsor and it would be great if my readers could show the company some love! 🙂
Any good brands I’ve left off my list? Let us know in a comment below.

I use an assortment of typical plastic containers for packing cold lunch items, but I recently found something for which I’d long been looking: tiny containers. They are perfect for sending along salad dressing, dip, a small sweet, raisins, pomegranate seeds… and other small things. The ones I bought are the Vital Baby 1 ounce containers available from Amazon. I also like the 8 oz Ball plastic freezer jars for sending along a smoothie.

Great tips! Thank you! FYI to all: Easy Lunchboxes also just came out with tiny containers — I just bought a few.

I so wish I’d known about that t-shirt thing before my beloved Ernest Hemingway/Key West shirt became a dust rag.

LOL. I’m sorry to hear that! 🙂
