I’m signing off early today for the holidays, so for our last Friday Buffet of the year, I leave you with a song — and a story of kids and (holiday) food gone bad:
Janet Poppendieck Sends a Note — and a Song!
In response to Monday’s “Janet Poppendieck Day” on TLT, I got this email from JP herself . . .
Dear Bettina,
I’m honored and very pleased to have a day named after me on The Lunch Tray. Thank you.
I thought I ought to post something, but I’m a bit distracted, and then I had an idea. As a sort of gift to you, I’m sending along the lyrics to a song that my friend and fellow WHYHUNGER? board member, Tom Chapin, wrote (after reading Free for All). It’s called “The Ultimate Lunchroom,” and I know you will enjoy it. Tom and his collaborator are working on a whole CD of food songs, called Good Food and the Good Earth, which should be out early in the new year. You can find him at www.tomchapin.com. Meanwhile, here are the words to “The Ultimate Lunchroom.”
Enjoy.

Nice, no?
Kids and (Holiday) Food Gone Bad
My friend Donna, source of many a TLT post, sent me this news story about kids, candy canes — and school detention?

Safe and happy holidays to all!
I’m taking a break from daily blogging until Monday, January 3rd, although I may post now and then in the interim if something catches my eye. Otherwise, see you in 2011!

Love Tom Chapin, my kids used to have his tapes when they were little! I need to look into getting CD’s of them for the classes I teach, no one has tape players anymore.
About the candycane caper: another blogger that I read had a comment from a person who had watched another news video and in it a parent claimed the principal made the statement that
“not everyone is cheerful at Christmas or wants to be cheerful, so maybe they should just keep their Christmas cheer to themselves!”
Which actually sounds like our assistant principal at times.
I can actually see this situation turning into a food fight, but the idea of spreading good cheer and wearing ugly or outlandish Holiday sweaters is a fun idea. I could see this happening at the small high school my daughter attends.

How cool. Tom Chapin’s associated with hunger & school meals? I guess that really shouldn’t surprise me. Went to a couple of his concerts back in my college days and even had a chance to meet and interview him for the college radio station.
Got kind of a kick out of the lyrics of the song – wish I went to work as late as 7 AM. Day’s half over by then. LOL! Oh, but I’d love to see the “culture of try” in action.

I know – so cute. When it comes out on CD I’ll try to link to the song.
