As we discuss the travails of picky eaters, processed snacks and unhealthy children’s menus in restaurants, it’s all too easy to forget that for many children, both in the United States and around the world, getting anything to eat is a desperate daily struggle.
The New York Times reports today that the United Nations has now officially declared the widespread food shortages in Somalia a “famine,” something the U.N. does only rarely. One in three Somali children’s lives are now at risk of death due to malnutrition, and conditions are worsening daily.
If you would like to donate to Somali relief efforts, two charities I support are Action Against Hunger and American Jewish World Service, both of which consistently receive the possible highest ratings from Charity Navigator. Their donation links are here and here, respectively.
Also, please remember that at the top of every page on this blog there’s always a “Feed Hungry Kids” tab with links to hunger-fighting charities doing excellent work both at home and abroad, along with a link to the fun and educational Free Rice games, which donate grains of rice for every correct answer you provide.
Thanks, all.
