Pushing the Limits of Gluttony

by Bettina Elias Siegel on August 23, 2010

Rivaling the Candwich for the title of “Sandwiches I Think I’ll Pass On”, check out this new creation from Denny’s, clocking in at almost 900 calories.

Thanks to Off the Kuff for sharing.

What does it say about our culture (or human nature) that at the same time we’re spending billions on diet aids, we also continually test the limits of how many calories we can consume in a single entree?  I’m thinking, of course, of the now-infamous Double Down sandwich, and of an NPR report I heard over the weekend on new heights of craziness in state fair  food:  apparently the fried Twinkie was deemed too spartan, so now they’re dipping it in white chocolate and rolling it in pecans.   Other innovations include “pigs in the mud” (chocolate-covered bacon), the cheeseburger nestled between slices of glazed sugar donuts, and even, yes, fried butter.

I love decadent treats, as Lunch Tray readers know.  (I’ve been known to chase down a particular cupcake truck here in Houston with an intensity that might frighten small children.)  But is it just me, or is there something almost grimly determined about these efforts to push the boundaries of gluttony?  Maybe people are so sick and tired of hearing experts tell them what’s “good” for them, that they run headlong into the other direction, taking “bad” food to its logical extreme?

Yes, it is KY State Fair time and the Krispy Creme Donut Cheese burger is there! Just passing by the booth made me gag.
I myself had a lamb gyro with onions, tomato, and Tzatziki sauce and a water. Am I boring or what?

We did buy German roasted nuts on the way out. 2 lg pkgs. One to our pregnant on bed rest married daughter and the other to take home.
It was fun watching other people eat at the fair: whole ears of roasted corn, pulled pork sandwiches, sausage with grilled onions, lots of spiral cut potatoes deep fried and covered in neon psuedo cheese, corn dogs at least a foot long, huge drinks in fake coconut shells and lots of beer.
We really go to the fair for the animals, fiber crafts, and people watching…in that order. Food comes in dead last.

Saw a sandwich on Food Network (possibly the Food Truck race) that, while obscene, sounds genius. A burger with 2 grilled cheese sandwiches acting as the top and bottom buns…clever. I think I would have to try it.

I just think these crazy items are a great marketing ploy. It’s clear people aren’t eating these regularly. Even Monica went behind my back at the rodeo one year and bought fried Oreos.

Donna – I agree that the stuff at the fair is no big issue since how often do people get to the fair? (And I myself might have to try a bite of donut burger – let’s face it, we all know that would taste good!) I’m more worried about the offerings of chains like Denny’s and KFC which, for many people, are a regular source of meals. But perhaps even there people have a little common sense? I’d love to see the sales figures for, e.g., the Double Down.

Wow. I love cheese. I really do. But that sandwich made me fight the urge to vomit. (Actually, maybe it’s precisely because I love cheese that I felt that way. I mean, the fillings of that mostrosity should probably legally be called “cheez” or “cheze” or some such, to indicate that it’s not actual cheese.)

The Washington County Fair in RI (effectively our state fair…RI only has two counties, and the other one is mostly the Providence metro area) had some really nice local fare that wasn’t deep fried, including Salt Potatoes (local new potatoes boiled in salt water and topped with butter. Delicious, and not that bad for you!)
