Spork Report: A School Food Audit and New Federal School Food Nutriton Standards Coming Tomorrow

On today’s Spork Report, I discuss intensive school food audit going on in my district this week.  While a USDA and state “Coordinated Review Effort” is routine, it’s also a big deal and the district has been working hard for months to prepare for it.

Also, as I mention in the post, tomorrow First Lady Michelle Obama and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will be announcing the long-awaited new school food nutritional standards promulgated as part of the passage of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.  I’ll be talking about those new standards here in the coming days.

Tom Vilsack was governor of my state for 8 years before becoming agriculture secretary.

I can’t recall him ever speaking about school lunch issues as governor.

He is a nice guy, but didn’t do a lot as governor. Whatever comes out of the new nutritional standards, I doubt Vilsack had much to do with it.
