After weeks of critical reporting about my district, I’m really glad to share this encouraging Spork Report post about the recent introduction of salad bars here in Houston ISD.
In the post I describe and share photos of a recent field trip to a low-income Houston school that’s one of three elementary schools piloting a new salad bar (also known as a “fruit and veggie cart,” so as not to turn off the salad haters.) I also share some big news: in the past, even a school willing to pay for its own salad bar could not get the district to stock it with food, but with changes to the way our menus will be planned, starting next year this will no longer be the case.
So check out today’s Spork Report and if you have experiences with salad bars in your own kids’ schools, good or bad, please leave a comment here or on that post. I’d love to hear what you have to say.
