I just want to thank Lisa Gray of Gray Matters for reprinting my Civil Eats piece on sugary school breakfasts in today’s Houston Chronicle.
While Houston ISD’s breakfast menu is used as a springboard for discussion in the piece, it’s certainly not alone in serving kids too much sugar; similar breakfast menus can be found in districts all over the country. Still, though, I’m very glad for the opportunity to reach more Houston ISD parents via the Chronicle, as this issue is directly affecting their kids every day.
And I’m also pleased to report that this very topic – sugar levels in our breakfasts – is on the agenda for our next HISD Nutrition Services Parent Advisory Committee meeting later this week. More to come.

Unfortunate truth — because of the 1 cup of fruit offered at breakfast mandate, no additional reimbursement given for breakfast despite the mandate, and no commodities being able to be used for breakfast menus to help offset costs, a 4oz juice is one of the 1/2 cup fruit options on my breakfast menu every day.
It kills me, but I can’t afford to offer a whole cup of fresh fruit at breakfast. I offer a 4oz of juice and a 1/2 cup of fresh fruit. That extra 1/2 cup of fresh fruit alone has increased my breakfast meal cost by almost $0.19/breakfast meal.
