As part of September’s annual “It Takes a Village to Pack a Lunch” series, today I’m pleased to share with you a new book by J.M. Hirsch, food editor for the Associated Press, longtime friend of The Lunch Tray and lunch-packer extraordinaire.
You might remember meeting J.M. Hirsch for the first time here when I shared his amusing 2010 video about giving his then-two-year-old son Parker a chef’s knife. (Yes, a full-sized chef’s knife!) In 2011, I interviewed him about his weeknight dinner cookbook High Flavor, Low Labor, and I’ve also told you about his daily blog chronicling the packing of Parker’s school lunches, Lunch Box Blues.
Now Hirsch has taken the best ideas from Lunch Box Blues and shared them in a new cookbook from Rachel Ray Books, Beating the Lunch Box Blues: Fresh Ideas for Lunches on the Go! Bursting with ideas for the packing of both kid and adult lunches, Hirsch brings an infectious exuberance and a lot of out-of-the-box thinking to what can be a mundane task. Leftover waffles from breakfast? Repurpose them as sandwich bread! Scrambled eggs for lunch – why not? Pizza “sushi” or fruit burritos? You bet!
With nearly 200 photos and more than 500 tips and meals, this book will grab you by the lapels and shake you out of even the worst lunch box packing ruts. And one lucky Lunch Tray reader can win a free copy just by leaving a comment below by 6pm CST, Tuesday, September 23rd 24th* You can tell me why you’d like to win or you can just say hi. I’ll use a random number generator after the comment period closes to select one lucky winner and if you comment twice (e.g., to respond to another reader’s comment), I’ll use the number of your first comment to enter you in the drawing. I’ll email you directly if you win and announce the winner on TLT’s Facebook page, too. (This giveaway is open only to U.S. residents.)
Good luck!
[Blogger disclosure: As with most of my book reviews, I received a free copy of this book for my perusal but I never accept any other form of compensation for the book reviews you see on The Lunch Tray.]
* Sorry, I flubbed the date here. The entry period closes on Tuesday, September 24th at 6pm CST.
