Just a quick post today to tell you about a neat program going on here in Houston in which high schoolers teach other kids about the benefits of healthy eating and regular exercise.
A few weeks ago a student named Pallavi Dev wrote to tell me about “H5H,” or “High Five for Health,” a program using the simple concept of the hand’s five fingers to highlight each of five healthy lifestyle recommendations. The teenagers leading the initiative work under the supervision of health care professionals and have been giving presentations in several elementary and middle schools in the Houston area.
As many parents learn to their chagrin, at a certain age the influence of our children’s peers begin to drown out our own voices. That’s why kid-led programs like H5H (as well as Catalyst, a teen-to-teen advocacy program in Minnesota I once featured here) are a promising means of spreading the word about healthful eating.
Are there any similar kid- or teen-led programs going on in your area? If so, let us know in a comment below!
