Just a few small items to share in today’s Friday Buffet — and one if them is very small, indeed!
A Last Word, For Now, on Walmart
I won’t belabor any further my discussion of the new Walmart nutrition initiative and whether it’s a net good or net evil for society. But if this topic is of interest to you, definitely check out the comments on my latest post, wherein I’m taken to task by several readers, including Mile Hi Mama, for taking Walmart’s side on this one. I’m sure that debate will continue to rage on . . .
The Fascinating (and Scary) World of Nanofoods
Fellow HISD Food Services PAC member Donna Gershenwald sent me this PBS article about nanofoods and the five things you need to know about them. Food that changes flavor on demand? A milk carton that tells you if the milk inside is spoiled? Cool! Unknown — but possibly disastrous — environmental risks and invasions of consumer privacy? Hmm. . . . maybe not so cool, after all.
An Interesting Event for Houston Readers
Through my involvement in the kid-and-food world, I’ve met Lisa Pounds, mom and founder of Green Plate Kids, a local company providing healthy prepared foods for kids, schools and families. Lisa will soon appear on The Lunch Tray as an interviewee, but Houston readers can meet her in person tomorrow (1/29) from 2-4pm at New Living, 6111 Kirby, where she’ll be discussing how to make your kitchen green and healthy from the inside out.
A New Feature on The Lunch Tray
I mentioned a few weeks ago my first meeting with the Houston Blogging Chicks, and how happy I was to find a group with whom I could freely discuss my new blogging obsession without scaring small children. Well, one of those amazing “chicks” is Stacey Nerdin, writer behind Tree, Root and Twig (a blog about parenting and products) as well as Fat Woman at the Gym (subtitled,”every body starts somewhere”) and many, many other online contributions. Though Stacey met me in person for all of thirty seconds, this past week she’s been astoundingly generous with her time and savvy blogging advice. One improvement to TLT which Stacey suggested is now up and running, and that’s a new “related posts” feature which will follow every entry from here on out. So now if you’re reading something that’s particularly interesting, you can find other, related discussions on The Lunch Tray without having to search. Thank you, Stacey! And look out for more groovy site improvements as I digest all the great materials Stacey sent my way.
Have a great weekend everyone! More Lunch Tray on Monday . . .
