Houston ISD’s School Health Advisory Council (SHAC), of which I’m a member, has been working hard all year to craft a new wellness policy for our district. Given that I’m in the thick of the process, I’m especially looking forward to serving as one of the panelists for a tweet chat tomorrow, Wednesday, April 16th, at 1pm EST, on school wellness policies.
The chat is hosted by Rudd ‘Roots Parents and I’ll be joined by co-panelists Rebecca Puhl, Deputy Director and Senior Research Scientist at the Yale Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity, and Hannah Jones, Nutrition Policy Coordinator for the Center for Science in the Public Interest. The goal of the chat is to help parents and other advocates learn about and use wellness policies to improve the school health environment for children. The hashtag for the chat is #wellnesswed.
On a related note, I wanted to let you know that Rudd ‘Roots Parents has recently redesigned its website, which was already one of the best resources out there for parents seeking to improve the food and health environment at their kids’ school. The site has a fresh, new layout and even more tools and resources to address topics like weight bias and weight-based bullying, the nutritional quality of school food and the marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages at schools.
Check it out, and see you tomorrow at 1pm EST!
