TLT’s Table: A Matzoh Treat (For Kids of All Faiths)

by Bettina Elias Siegel on April 18, 2011

The Jewish holiday Passover starts tonight, so I thought I’d share a kid-friendly recipe that’s become a family tradition in the TLT household.

Called “My Trademark, Most Requested, Absolutely Magnificent Caramel Matzoh Crunch,” the recipe is from Marcy Goldman’s A Treasury of Jewish Holiday Baking. While I’m not sure it’s “tradmarked” (lots of families have a variation of this recipe in their repertoire), it is fun to make with kids, and it’s delicious to eat.

Essentially you’re spreading a pan of matzoh with buttery caramel, baking it, and then adding chocolate, white chocolate, nuts, coconut flakes, candy sprinkles or whatever else suits your fancy.    Then you let it cool and break it up in to bite-sized bits.

We’re making our own batch later in the week, but here’s a photo from last year’s Matzoh-Crunch-a-Palooza.

(L-R): caramel with white chocolate, chocolate with coconut, and chocolate with white chocolate

Who says the Bread of Affliction can’t be fun?

[I confess I feel a little ridiculous posting this after sharing the recent NYT  "Is Sugar Toxic?" article on the TLT Facebook page, but maybe even Dr. Lustig would give us a pass for an annual holiday tradition.  :-)    Also, just to prove I'm an equal opportunity blogger, I'll have links to some Easter treats later in the week.]
