You never know how readers will react to a particular blog post.
Last week, when I shared my recent epiphany about packing iced herbal teas in my kids’ lunches as a healthy facsimile of the sugary, colored drinks many of their peers get, I was pretty sure most people would find the idea really obvious or maybe unappealing. Instead, that iced tea post got forwarded all over the place (!) and many of you said you wanted to try the idea out on your own kids.
So that’s why I’m back with this little tidbit. While grocery shopping yesterday I happened to come across a line of all-natural, caffeine-free flavored teas designed just for kids! How perfect, right?
The teas are made by The Republic of Tea and one dollar of the purchase price is donated by the company to Room to Read, a nonprofit that sets up libraries in the developing world. It was the charitable donation that helped me get over the steep price for this tea — $10.50 per 36-bag tin when purchased on the Republic of Tea website, $9.99 at my grocery store. But based on how I brew iced tea, I figure that one tin will make about four or five pitchers of tea, and each will fill up quite a few of our lunch box drink containers, which only hold maybe five or six ounces.
I brewed up a batch of the Strawberry Vanilla last night and the kids gave it a rave review when I gave them a taste at breakfast this morning. You can see the whole line of Little Citizens’ Herb Tea here.

I saw your origianl tea post and was too busy to comment at the time and then forgot! Seeing this reminded me of a tip! I too have been making iced tea for my son’s lunches. I usually combine a flavored decaf tea with a decaf regular black tea. I find the regualr teas adds a little more fullness to the tea. Then I sweeten with Agave Nectar and a little of lemon juice. My son begs me to make this and he has figured out that he likes to sometimes mix it half and half with lemonade! Another good lunch box drink treat is flavored coconut water. He’s not so crazy about it plain but likes to add a stevia packet to it. He says Zico Mango and Vita Coco Acai Berry are his favorites but there are lots of other naturaly flavored coconut waters that most kids would like! Not to mention all the potassium in one container!
